Everything: surfing, cinema, good music, skateboarding, special meetings, networking, championships, exhibitions, workshops…

A diverse and open festival, committed to the care of our seas and planet, and paddling for equality, inclusion and many more values surrounding surfing!

We met from Wednesday 28th February to Sunday 3rd March in Muxikebarri Getxo and Itsasmuseum Bilbao living the best 5 days of the year.

LABORAL KUTXA BILBAO SURF FILM FESTIVAL 2023

Held between Thursday 23rd and Sunday 26th February, with the inauguration at Muxikebarri Getxo in a grand opening gala that reinforced our presence on the Biscayan coast, with the rest of the sessions and activities being held at the Itsasmuseum Bilbao as the permanent and main venue, placing the event in the Biscayan capital, with all that this entails in terms of international projection.

Once again, it was much more than an international surf film festival. The edition has created industrial and economic synergies, bringing surfing closer to the public, as well as facilitating access to culture and sport, promoting female presence and accessibility and raising awareness of sustainability and the environment.

There were online surfing championships, skateboarding championships and exhibitions, an international surfing photography competition with a wide participation and high level, free activities such as surf-skate, viewing of Virtual Reality (VR) or skate films, round tables (on sustainability and adapted sports), audiovisual industry networking, talks and participative workshops, presentation of products and services in the Surf Market and a solidarity fundraiser for the Izurdeak Association of adapted surfing, a member of FEKOOR.

We are consolidating our position as a European and international benchmark, both for professionals in the audiovisual and surfing industry, as well as for fans and the general public. Adding the support of new sponsors and collaborators such as Bilbao City Council, Surf Channel, O’neill, Autonervión… and institutional support through grants from the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the Basque Government and the NextGenerationEU of the European Union, helping to consolidate the projection and growing impact.

LABORAL KUTXA BILBAO SURF FILM FESTIVAL 2022

One more year, against the current, with rough seas and surfing the biggest waves we can remember, we came back with full batteries and a lot of enthusiasm with the Laboral Kutxa Bilbao Surf Film Festival!

Because after two years of riding wave after wave of a pandemic that seems to have no end, and by now we knew how to emerge victorious from it: because nothing could stop our desire to see, feel, live and be moved.

And knowing that the audience felt the same way about it, we organised an edition full of emotions and novelties. The main thing, a great selection of short films and documentaries with unique stories and spectacular images of surfing and sliding sports that competed for our awards.

In addition, numerous participatory activities, talks with personalities from the sport and the surf industry, cultural exhibitions open to the public and even a skateboarding championship rounded off the non-stop programme.

If for some reason it was not possible to physically attend an event or screening, some films were made available again on the FILMIN platform, and many of the activities were streamed on Twitch.

LABORAL KUTXA BILBAO SURF FILM FESTIVAL 2021

In a 2021 still marked by the consequences of the biggest pandemic in recent years, we believe it is important to continue to support culture, sport and local creation.

Because a virus couldn’t stop our desire to see, feel, live and relive. As attested by the good reception of the fifth edition of our LKBSFF, to which dozens of directors and creators from all over the world sent their pieces wishing to form part of the festival’s official line-up.

A wide selection of these films, together with an offer of activities, workshops and exhibitions completed an ambitious and original programme.

As a novelty, and following our protocols with COVID, in 2021 most of the participating films were available on the online platform FILMIN, and some of the events were also streamed on YouTube.

So, whether in person or online, it was a pleasure to enjoy the fifth edition of one of the biggest international surf festivals!

LABORAL KUTXA BILBAO SURF FILM FESTIVAL 2020

First edition of this multidisciplinary festival developed around surfing: cinema, photography, sport, conferences, training, commerce and live music coexisting in the best locations in Bilbao: Itsasmuseum and Azkuna Zentroa.

We managed to bring together the different disciplines that surround and nurture the world of surfing, in a city like Bilbao, Bizkaia, Basque cultural capital, surrounded by the world-famous Basque coast, a meeting place for local and foreign surfers, with a great impact on the surfing industry.

Locals and visitors were able to mingle with fans and protagonists of the surfing world, achieving a good attendance (1,700), and hanging the SOLD OUT in different sessions.

In this way, the transmission of socially positive values such as cultural and sporting promotion, ecology, female visibility, etc. is achieved.
