Hey, welcome one more year to the most epic Basque surf festival: the LABORAL Kutxa Bilbao Surf Film Festival 2024!

As every February, we are back with more good vibes than ever. This year, in addition to the most amazing movies and activities that you have come to expect, we bring you more free concerts than waves in the sea and participatory activities for all ages! Imagine: surfing, movies, good music, skateboarding, special meetings, networking, championships, expos, workshops…

A diverse and open festival, committed to the care of our seas and planet, and paddling for equality, inclusion and many more values surrounding surfing!

See you from Wednesday February 28 to Sunday March 3 in Muxikebarri Getxo and Itsasmuseum Bilbao to live the best 5 days of the year! Follow us also on social networks!

It was held between Thursday, February 23 and Sunday, February 26, with the inauguration in Muxikebarri Getxo in a grand opening gala that has strengthened our presence on the coast of Bizkaia, holding the rest of the sessions and activities in the Itsasmuseum Bilbao as permanent and main venue, placing the event in the capital of Bizkaia, with what in terms of international projection that means.

Once again, has been much more than an international surf film festival. This edition has created industrial and economic synergies, bringing surfing closer to the public, as well as facilitating access to culture and sport, promoting female presence and accessibility and raising awareness about sustainability and the environment.

There were online surfing championships, skateboarding championships and shows, international surfing photography contest with a wide participation and high level, free activities such as surf-skating, viewing of Virtual Reality (VR) or skate films, round tables (on sustainability and adapted sports), audiovisual industry networkingtalks and participatory workshops, presentation of products and services in the Surf Market and a solidarity fundraising for the Izurdeak Association of adapted surfing, a member of FEKOOR.

We have established ourselves as a European and international reference, both for professionals in the audiovisual and surf industry, as well as for fans and the general public. We have added the support of new sponsors and collaborators such as the City Council of Bilbao, Surf Channel, O’neill, Autonervión… and we have had the institutional support through grants from the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the Basque Government and the NextGenerationEU of the European Union, helping to consolidate the projection and impact upwards.

One more year, against the tide, with rough seas and surfing the biggest big waves we can remember, we came back with full batteries and lots of enthusiasm with the Laboral Kutxa Bilbao Surf Film Festival!

Because after two years of riding wave after wave of a pandemic that seems to have no end, and at that point we already knew how to emerge victorious from them: because nothing can stop our desire to see, feel, live and get excited.

And knowing that you were dying for it too, we organized an edition full of emotions and novelties. The main thing, a great selection of short films and documentaries with unique stories and spectacular images of surfing and sliding sports that competed to win our awards.

In addition, a number of participatory activities, talks with personalities of the sport and the surf industry, cultural exhibitions open to the public and even a skateboarding championship completed a non-stop program.

If for any reason it was not possible to physically attend any event or screening, some films were again available on the FILMIN platform, and many of the activities were streamed on Twitch.

In a 2021 still marked by the consequences of the biggest pandemic in recent years, we believe it is important to continue to support culture, sports and local creation.

Because a virus could not stop our desire to see, feel, live and relive. As attested by the great reception of the fifth edition of our LKBSFF, to which dozens of directors and creators from all over the world have sent their pieces wishing to be part of the official poster of the festival.

A large selection of these films, together with an offer of activities, workshops and exhibitions complete an ambitious and original program.

As a novelty, and following our protocols vis-à-vis COVID, this year, most of the participating films will be available on the online platform FILMIN, and some of the events were also streamed on YouTube.

So, whether in person or online, it was a pleasure to enjoy the fifth edition of one of the biggest international surf festivals!

First edition of this multidisciplinary festival developed around surfing: film, photography, sport, lectures, training, trade and live music coexisting in the best locations in Bilbao: Itsasmuseum and Azkuna Zentroa.

It has managed to bring together the different disciplines that surround and nurture the world of surfing, in a city like Bilbao, Bizkaia, basque cultural capital, surrounded by the world famous Basque coast, a meeting place for local and foreign surfers, with a great impact on the surf industry.

Locals and visitors have been able to mingle with fans and protagonists of the surfing world, achieving a large attendance (1,700), and hanging the SOLD OUT in the various sessions.

Thus achieving a transmission of socially positive values such as cultural and sports promotion, ecology, female visibility…
